Healing from Intrafamilial Abuse:
The Roots of Non-Support
Presented by Meghan Hurley, LCSW
RBRC Mental Health Coordinator

How to support the non-offending Caregiver
A child’s resiliency to a trauma has more to do with the response and the support
system, than with the actual type of abuse that occurred. “Secrecy traumas”, often
involving child maltreatment are different and how these traumas are more likely to
result in Post-Traumatic Stress.

Professionals will learn to…
• Educate parents on the Dynamics of Sexual Abuse
• Explain Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder
• Instill hope for parents to believe their family will recover from sexual abuse
• Engaging parents who struggle to support their child abuse victim
• Recognizing the root causes of non-support for child abuse survivors
• Empathizing, Educating and Engaging parents with resources
• Understanding why some parents are vulnerable to offenders
